What is the difference between Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps?

Air Source

Air source heat pumps share the appearance of air conditioning units, typically mounted to an external wall outside your home. Although they don’t require much space, they are a visible addition to your home.

ASHPs require fans to operate; as a result, they do generate noise. However, air-source heat pumps are typically very quiet but may make more noise when it is colder outside. Again, your installer can help you to determine the best location for your heat pump.

A typical air source heat installation takes just one day.

Ground Source

As the name suggests, ground source heat pumps are installed underground. As a result, it’s important to consider if you have adequate outdoor space to fit a ground loop. Most ground loop installations are fitted horizontally; however, they can also be installed vertically. Vertical installations require less space but will increase the cost of installation. In addition, ground source heat pumps also require indoor space for the heat pump unit.

Ground source heat pumps require a considerable amount of planning and labour. As a result, installation can take several weeks.

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

ASHP’s are a renewable energy source that uses the air outside to heat your home, even in cold weather. ASHP’s are a direct replacement for traditional gas and oil boilers, using natural energy sources in contrast to finite fossil fuels.

An effectively installed ASHP can transfer three to four times more energy into your home than it uses. Because of this, ASHPs are incredibly efficient, so many homeowners are turning to ASHPs to heat their homes.

How does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

An ASHP works by extracting heat from outside and delivering it as warm water and heating. It achieves this by behaving as a refrigeration system, but in reverse.

Air source heat pumps consist of four key components.

  • Evaporator
  • Compressor
  • Condenser
  • Expansion Valve

The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, evaporates, and passes through to the compressor. The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant to the condenser. In turn, the condenser condenses the gas back to a liquid state and, in doing so, creates heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Air Source Heat Pumps are a relatively new energy source. As a result, our customers often have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about ASHP systems. If you have any questions, please get in touch with our service team.

Can I replace my boiler with an Air Source Heat Pump?

In most cases, yes, an air source heat pump will meet your heating demands. However, you must have a well-insulated home to ensure your ASHP is effective. Furthermore, ASHPs work optimally when combined with underfloor heating.

Are there any grants for Air Source Heat Pumps?

Yes, you can claim up to £5,000 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump to replace your gas boiler. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was introduced in April 2022 and isn’t scheduled to end until 2025.

How efficient are Air Source Heat Pumps?

An air-source heat pump produces 3 kWh of heat while using just 1 kWh of electricity. To put this into perspective, the average UK home uses 12,000 kWh of electricity to heat their home and water. So when replacing your boiler with an ASHP, you can expect to use just 4,000 kWh of electricity.

Do I require planning permission before having an ASHP installed?

In the vast majority of cases, you do not require planning permission to install an air source heat pump. There are some exceptions. You can find a detailed list of exceptions via the planning portal.
